November 15th 2012 INVSOC Potluck

Tonights potluck celebrated Dr Luke graduating, after many years of hard work to become a medical professional.  We've loved having you here Luke, and wish you well for your work in Gisborne :-)

We've doctors *and* nurses in the Invercargill Vegan Society :-)

I brought Indian Seasoned Potatoes (cumin, fenugreek, coriander, mustard and sesame seeds...), vegan custard and cheese brought down by my friend Jen :-)

Listen to what we each brought while you look through our photos :-)

Our November potluck (ignore that little 1st of November thing) was held at Russell and Noelle's house.  They have a beautiful vegetable garden :-)

And Kira, a very friendly dog :-)

Russell with their herb garden, Apple tree in the centre

Russell challenged us to guess what he was making for our potluck, posting this sneak peek photo on Facebook...

We discovered he'd made a mushroom lentil pie, with the word VEGAN emblazoned across the top! :-)

After we destroyed the pie crust's integrity, like an earthquake swallowing up the Hollywood sign!

Top left Seitan, top right Calzone, bottom left seasoned potatoes, bottom right mushroom lentil pie.

Aftermath, with deserts, Custard, chocolate dipped strawberries, watermelon, Turkish Delight, rasbperry tart, cake.

Take care Dr Luke!  Best wishes from all your friends at the Invercargill Vegan Society, we hope to see you again soon :-)

Vegan Cheese, Custard, Chocolate Mousse! PHOTOS

My friend Jen brought some Vegan cheese from Dunedin down with her! :-)  Also shared were huge bowls of custard and chocolate mousse :-)

Jen came down from Queenstown, although soon she'll be living in and doing fantastic Vegan work in Dunedin :-)

Oreti Beach on a gorgeous day, setting of The World's Fastest Indian  (See also recent movie "Two Little Boys")

Stirling Point (Landsend) Bluff, bottom of the South Island.  ~19,000 KM to London, ~15,000KM to New York City :-)

Just before I took this photo of Jen, there were two Indonesian tourists who'd travelled the entire length of New Zealand.  Its always a little sad to see tourists having to take a photo of one another, one posing, the other taking the photo.  I'll offer to take a photo of them posing together, and they usually are quite grateful.  As "the camera" was passed to me, I realised it was an iPhone 5, oooh, the first time I'd fully used one.   I joked about "slumming it" with my beloved iPhone 4 :-)

Bluff Hill, with the Tiwai point Aluminium Smelter in the background, makers of "the finest Aluminium in the world".  Local metal is used in the wings of the Airbus A380.  The Wikipedia entry on Bluff shows a fantastic photo taken from space showing the peninsula , awesome to say "hey, thats exactly where we are!" :-)

I've visited Bluff with Dan and Australian friend Justin of Hellhound Hotdogs before.
Jen and I had a great day seeing the Southland sights.  The cheese she brought down from Dunedin is not yet available here in Invercargill, although with increasing membership of the Invercargill Vegan Society, more Vegan products are sure to be stocked soon! :-) Australian firm cheese by Kingland, their yoghurt is available in Invercargill.

My friend Katie suggests "the yellow 'soya cheese' is best when frozen and grated over food"

Scottish Vegan cheese :-)

A friend on Facebook commented when I first shared this blogpost: "I'm very gluttonous when it comes to cheese. Especially Brie and camembert. Don't know if Soy Cheese would substitute."

My vegan friend Veronique mentioned:
"Well I grew up in France, land of Brie and Camembert. I ate that like crazy until i went Vegan in 2006. The tastebuds relearn and your forget about it when you know it is a cruel product."

If its good enough for my French born friend Veronique to "substitute" Vegan cheese in place of Non Vegan cheese, it should be good enough for everyone :-)

Unlike the vegan cheese from Dunedin, gluten free Australian brand Orgran has both Custard and Chocolate Mousse easily available in Invercargill, from Plaza Supervalue.

I love thick custard, made simply by adding two (more like three) Tablespoons of the Custard mix, with 1 Tablespoon of sugar and a total of 500ml of Soymilk.

Chocolate mousse wasnt as nice, its a single serving of chocolate powder and water mixed together.  I whisked by hand which left it heavier, if I'd used an electric blender and/or beaten longer, it would have fluffed up more.  As shown, its more of an "instant pudding" :-)

Thank you to Jen for bringing down Vegan cheese, while its not quite to my taste (at least yet!), I love the Kingland brand's soy yoghurt which is easily found in Invercargill supermarkets, and it can only be a good thing if vegan cheese is available in Invercargill supermarkets soon :-)

Pak n Save "Cheep Cheep Chicken Week" PHOTOS

Following the usual "Meat Week" nonsense at Pak n Save, where huge ads all throughout the store alert us to how very very lucky we are to be shopping amongst their morgue aisle, now they've turned it up a notch into "Cheep Cheep Chicken Week", advertising "Chicken [their killed bodies], and things that taste like chicken, smell like chicken, has chicken in it, or comes from a chicken, like eggs or more chicken".

This Time Its Personal.  My sweet Rescued Hen Friend Curious Hen is sick, she's hit the point where her body is breaking down inside from the number of eggs we've made her create.  No bird is meant to lay nonstop, when "farm hens" get to 18 months old, they are KILLED because their "egg production" decreases, and eventually stops.  In the case of Curious Hen, she appears to have Egg Peritonitis, she is essentially passing egg yolk without a shell.  Its like shes bleeding egg yolk.  The vets have said theres nothing that can be done, I've taken her back multiple times for x rays, but its a matter of her simply shutting down, and most likely she will die from an infection.

I've been feeding her daily through a needleless syringe, holding her head back and beak open while I slowly squirt fine blended porridge onto her tongue.  She wouldnt eat or drink without my aid, she'd simply starve to death due to feeling ill inside.

My big beautiful Hen Friend, who never hurt anyone, who simply liked to sit on my knee, or balance on my leg, she's gravely ill and theres nothing that can be done, we bred these hens into this state of insane egg laying, and we simply kill them before they hit this age, where the egg conveyor belt goes crazy inside.

Curious Hen has even laid a "lash" or two, which are essentially egg like lumps that look like a freaking testicle or something, kinda a rubbery yellow hard lump.........which has freaking "meat" inside.......  Apparently they are caused due to damage to her reproductive system, and part of the lining comes away, to coil up and be crapped out in this hard "egg" like form.  The flesh inside a "lash" is part of her reproductive tract.  Very unpleasant to look at, you can see a "lash" which looks like "an egg filled with meat" on this blogpost.

The best that can be done for Curious Hen is to keep her safe and warm, to keep her fed, and to hope that she can cease laying eggs, for her body to take care of itself inside, to heal over.  No medical intervention is possible, its just a matter of keeping her fed twice a day, by syringe.

And here we have a large supermarket chain boasting of how "cheap cheap" it regards Chickens lives to be.  Its outrageous.

An RSPCA collector was inside Pak n Save, I gave her some money while saying I was with the Invercargill Vegan Society (I gave a card) and that we supported their No Kill shelter work, thanking her for what they did.  The SPCA is an Animal Welfare organisation, not an Animal Rights organisation, I support them for looking after cats and dogs, as my Grandmother volunteered at our local shelter for many years.

How odd to see the promotion of killing Chickens "and things that taste like chicken" at a supermarket while a member of the "Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" is inside!  We're living in a Non Vegan world folks.

All throughout the supermarket:

What particularly caught my eye was this though, where children are to pose as though they are riding a Hen.  A rather parrot like beak (like I can talk though, check out Black Chicks beak in this blogs logo!), and no wattle, the dangly bit underneath their beak.

Encouraging children to accept our domination and control of Chickens, through "Cheep Cheep Chicken Week"?  To heck with that, I gave the Hen a voice of her own:

A few weird looks as I added this and took photos, but it was fun leaving it in place.

I've contacted Pak n Save supermarket about having a "Vegan Week", where all fruit and vegetables would be discounted, alongside tofu, plantmilk and other healthy Vegan products.  Even if the discounts were 1% off the usual price, it would be fantastic to see it happen, and its certainly better for everyone involved to promote buying more plants and vegetables than killed animals and the products of their female cycle.

Yellow Hen doing her bit to help her brother and sister Chickens :-)

I thought of Curious Hen while I was away at the supermarket, and of how I would keep doing all I can to keep her alive.  Like the portrayal of a Hen in the Pak n Save ad, she would want us to promote Veganism, the non harm of Other Animals.

As you'll hear in this episode, Vegan pilot Marty took me on a tour of the Vegan World in his jet!

All my life I'd dreamed of being a pilot, just like Tom Cruise in Top Gun!

Hey Marty, can I try flying this huge expensive plane, pleaaaaaaaaase????

"You sure you can handle this Jordan?"

Sure Marty!  I mean, what could possibly go wrong???

After visiting over 30 Vegans around the world for World Vegan Day, we flew back home to Invercargill, New Zealand for the Invercargill Vegan Societies special World Vegan Day dinner event.

As you can see on our World Vegan Day 2012 page, we had a great time.  Unfortunately, Marty had to return home to Brooklyn, but he left the good people of Invercargill a going away present - molten slag all along our main street after a dramatic exit! :-)
