Black Chick 2009-2012

At around 12:50 AM Wednesday 22nd February 2012 while checking my Hen Friends during the night I found Black Chick dead.  I loved her very much, and have buried her beside Mr Rooster and Ms Hen under the Silver Birch in our backyard.

My first photo of Black Chick, an hour, a couple of hours after she hatched, with her mother Ms Hen

My last photo of Black Chick hours before she died

Episode 76 Eye on INVSOC

Episode 76 Eye on INVSOC

Milford Sound Monorails scaring poor Hunters away with their loud swooshing, Pea Farmers and Pigeons "…just shut your eyes and go for it", Killer Whales: Fighting For [their] Rights (to party?), Veganism in the Otago Daily Times, Veganism, The Invercargill Vegan Society in the Invercargill Eye newspaper.

Hello and welcome to another top quality episode of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals, Episode 76, Eye on INVSOC.

Lets get started with our usual entree of local news stories, local if you live in Invercargill, New Zealand.

On building a monorail through a national park, to make tourism easier, involving the cutting down of native trees:

""People are incredibly satisfied with the whole trip to Milford Sound. It's the most beautiful road you can imagine ... the nasty parts are being stuck in a metal can, a bus ... a monorail is another metal can.""

"Lodge customers and visitors to the valley came for peace and quiet away from stress, she said.
"The peace is what strikes everybody when they come ... it's not just about us. All the hunters who go through, every single one says [that they would] never go up the valley again if the monorail was there."
The lodge would certainly put in a submission against the monorail, she said.
"We need to speak out and let people know about it. It's not for me to persuade the whole world I'm right. I have an opinion ... but it's for people to be aware of this land."

So, the hunters who go out with their bang bang guns and everything, they are worried about the gentle swish of a quiet monorail going past and making noise?  These people who fire off guns all over the bush, they are worried about disturbing the peace as they run about, killing other animals for fun, with their firearms?  Intent to Kill, premeditated murder, bang bang bang bang bang, these people are worried about the monorail making a bit of noise?

We just need to build Monorails all over the place to stop animal killing!  Wheres Lyle Lanely  when you need him?

2012 Surf to City funrun Team Vegan, INVSOC

This year I decided to enter the 2012 Surf to City funrun, wearing a Team Vegan shirt :-)  My friends Russell and Noelle joined me in the run.

Start of the race, Oreti Beach

"Caution Kereru" sign in Otatara, the large native pigeons get drunk from "fermenting" (rotting) berries, and clumsily fly about, potentially flying low over the roads!

Running past Invercargill Prison, thinking of Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.  At this time, there was about a kilometre to go.

Finish line at Queens Park! check out "Smiley" in red! :-)  (Apparently we had "Gryffindor sucks!" on the back of our green shirts)

But the day didnt end there, NO!  This is Invercargill, a happening place!

I visited the Queens Park ducks

And saw the Farmers Market, held each Sunday.  They had fresh fruit and vegetables being sold, as well as many different types of killed animals, including "Kapuka" Pig Flesh, which are the ultimate in "happy meat" free range nonsense, they even have this option to "adopt a pig"

"We will grow your pig, give you updates along the way and when it’s ready process it, package it and send it to you – keep it for yourself or share it with family and friends.

Sit back and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing exactly what you are eating, where it came from and that it was grown with care and respect."

I would love to have a stall selling Vegan food (at cost) as an excuse to have information about Veganism.

At the other end of Queens Park, past Feldwick Gates

And Burt Munro ( "Worlds Fastest Indian" movie starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Hannibal Lecter about local man Burt who set a world speed record )

Was a carnival!  I like this HDR image of the Ferris Wheel

On my way home, I walked into Pak n Save, my local supermarket and bought some fruit.  I couldnt resist getting these fortune cookies too.  My first fortune?  "Good health will be yours for a long time".  Yeah right, tell that to my unfit, aching legs after the run! :-)

Thank you very much to my friend Russell and Noelle for joining me, representing the Invercargill Vegan Society, Team Vegan and hell, Vegans everywhere, we completed Invercargill's 2012 Surf to City fun run :-)

INVSOC enters funrun, hideous running shoes and a wild rabbit! PHOTO

I'm going to enter the local Surf to City funrun wearing my Team Vegan shirt for INVSOC, hopefully a couple other Invercargill Vegans will run with me - they wont be embarrassed to be seen near these awful coloured new running shoes I've bought :-)  Blue/Silver/White is not exactly my ideal colour combination for a new pair of shoes :-)

Walking home, having bought Brooks brand shoes on recommendations from my Vegan friends around the world, I spotted another wild Rabbit living in the Otepuni Gardens, near the Invercargill Vegan Society World Vegan Day tree :-)  They might be the same exact rabbit as seen in this video!

More details about the Fun Run as they become available, we'll be sure to take lots of photos!
